WEEKLY BULLETIN

Friday

Dear Parents and Carers, You will be aware that in September we introduced DEAR time into every day where all students ‘drop everything and read’ for twenty minutes. The book that I have just purchased to start reading next week is called Inventing Ourselves; The Secret Life of the Teenage Brain. It is based on the latest research and aims to answer questions such as: What makes the adolescent brain different? Why does an easy child become a challenging teenager? What drives the excessive risktaking and the need for intense friendships common to teenagers? Professor Dame Sally Davies claims that this book should be read by everyone who looks after adolescents. What is my point of sharing this with you? Often teenagers are criticised and some people point the finger of blame at various sources namely; parents, schools, friendship groups, the lack of policing and social media, to name but a few. But what do we achieve by blaming? Surely, we should all be working together to take collective responsibility for helping adolescents to embrace opportunities, face their challenges and become responsible members of our community. This means setting clear boundaries and rules, having the highest expectations of behaviour and conduct, being good role models by showing respect, good manners, compassion, kindness and consideration. If adolescents witness this in all facets of their lives we will see a difference in our local community and society as a whole. Not a day goes by when I am not truly grateful for working with, and influencing the lives of so many adolescents because at The Grove we have so many wonderfully energising and inspiring young people who will be amazing role models for future generations. Mrs Sonia Taylor, Headteacher

Movement of Tutor Time At The Grove we are proud of our tutor programme and the support it offers students. Tutor time is used to deliver a number of educational programmes; to discuss key issues around health and emotional well-being; to monitor progress and attendance; to recognise and acknowledge hard work and effort; and to ensure all students are prepared for the day ahead. In recognition of this we are moving Tutor time to the start of the day. The school day will remain the same, starting at 8:40am and finishing at 3:00pm. Tutor time will move to the start and consequently periods 1 and 2 will move forward. Break and lunch will be at the same time. From Monday 2nd December the day will be as follows: 8:40 - 9:00 Tutor 9:00 – 10:00 Period 1 10:00 – 11:00 Period 2 11:00 - 11:20 Break 11:20 - 12:20 Period 3 12:20 - 13:15 Period 4 13:15 - 1:45 Lunch 1:45 - 2:05 DEAR 2:05 - 3:00 Period 5 This will allow tutors greater opportunities to ensure students are prepared for learning and improve opportunities to support students where needed. If you have any questions concerning the change please feel free to attend the parent drop-in session on Thursday’s of week A.

Match Reports

Christmas Lights Switch On

Year 9 Boys Football Well done to the Year 9 Boys Football Team who showed great resilience, in their President Trophy fixture against Telford Langley School, to fight back from 4 – 1 down at half time, to make it 4 – 3 with 5 minutes remaining. The team gave everything to try and score the equaliser, but unfortunately got caught out twice on the counter attack, with the game ending 6 – 3. Year 10 Girls Football The Year 10 girls performed really well recently in their tournament against The Marches, SJT and Oswestry School. Although the scores did reflect some excellent Football from all teams, the girls were very unlucky not to secure a win after some very close fought matches. The results were loss 1-0, Loss 1-0, Draw 1-1.

VoiceBox have performed at two events now since returning in September, the first being as part of the Drayton Arts Festival at the Methodist Church and this Saturday just gone as part of the Light Switch On event. An enjoyable time was had by all involved, a great crowd stopped to watch and they were even joined by former student Grace Murray. VoiceBox and The Grove's Harmony Choir both performed a variety of songs, some Christmas some not and did really well. Super proud Music Teacher, Miss Brundrett commented; “They worked really hard, sounded fantastic and behaved impeccably, a real credit to The Grove School and Sixth Form. A huge well done!” If you missed the performances, Parents and Carers will next have opportunity to see VoiceBox at our Carol Service at St. Mary's on Wednesday 4th December starting at 5:30pm.

CHAT Every Wednesday lunchtime, there is a CHAT (Confidential Health and Advice for Teens) drop-in session available for students with the school nurse - these sessions take place in the office next to English. This is a free confidential health and well-being service available to our students.

Samaritans Appeal Our Year 7 students have been busy this week, collecting and packing gifts for the Samaritans Purse Shoe Box Appeal. The students have kindly brought in gifts and also donations of money, which will be distributed around the world to children in need for Christmas.

Clubs & Enrichment Students interested in Squash Club on Wednesdays, or joining Boxing Club after school on Thursdays, please see the PE Department. Both clubs are free of charge. Click here for a full list of clubs and enrichment activities.
